Hospitals are some of the most iconic film shoot locations for any production team to recreate. They are instantly familiar to your audience yet are also some of the most prop-intensive spaces to build. From hospital beds to beeping medical equipment, it takes a lot to make a believable hospital. That's why many filmmakers opt to outsource their hospital needs in one of two ways. Either they work out a deal with a Vancouver hospital with film-friendly policies or they find a set designed to look like a hospital. Both approaches have their advantages so which is right for your production company?

Hospital film sets are the fastest and most affordable way to quickly get to work in a filmmaking space. Many Vancouver production companies have standing sets that recreate a hospital bedroom, dentist's office, morgue, nurse's station and other facilities. The benefits of hospital sets for filming include being able to make changes as needed. A working hospital will place restrictions on what filmmakers can and can't do within their space.
A hospital film set will also have better access to power ports and lighting installed with the ends of filmmakers in mind. Hospital sets can be rented for as short as an hour at a time and at any time of the day. They may also come with essential props like patient gowns, nurse's uniforms, doctor's tools, and other items that would take time to source on your own. For future filmmaking needs, look into other standing set designs like salons, prisons, junkyards, and other spaces.

Your other option is to partner with a hospital that's open to filming on location. Sometimes there's no substitute for an authentic venue, as with a documentary or historic film set inside of a particular hospital. Big budget films that need the most authentic space possible also prefer booking a working hospital.
You'll need to arrange the reservation weeks in advance, however. You will also likely be limited to filming only in certain wings or rooms and have to be careful not to include staff, patients, and visitors in your footage. A film-friendly hospital may only allow you to film on weekends or evenings. And you could be limited in how much you can make adjustments to a particular room. That said, there's no substitute for the sheer authenticity a film-friendly hospital affords you.
