Where was “Love and Monsters” filmed?

The “Love and Monsters” filming location might come as a surprise to you. While the lush, mountainous landscape looks like California, it’s actually on the other side of the world!
The majority of “Love and Monsters” was in fact filmed in Queensland, Australia. According to the film’s Supervising Location Manager, Duncan Jones, the crew settled on this region for the very “location dependent film” because they needed somewhere that was truly, “big, amazing, and wild”.
You can hear more about Duncan Jones’ choices for filming venues in this video:
Darlington

With Australia being a tropical location, you may be wondering how the film crew was able to recreate a California-esque environment. The secret? Filming in Darlington, Queensland.
You can thank this area for providing many of the gorgeous, outdoor “Love and Monsters” filming locations you see in the movie! Darlington is a small village with gorgeous surroundings in Australia’s Scenic Rim Region.
In the area, Alexander Peak rises 600 meters above sea level – giving the area California mountain vibes. Plus, the landscape is filled with vegetation you would expect to see in California, rather than the tropics of Australia! Maybe this is the location Actress Ariana Greenblatt was describing to Screen Rant when she said, “ A lot of the locations were so, so beautiful. I could name one where there was random cows roaming where we were filming, and this lush green mountain.”
Sirromet Winery

The scene with Joel coming out of the bunker to begin his quest to find Aimee seems so beautifully unreal. However, this “Love and Monsters” filming location exists in real life!
The establishing sequences of Joel were filmed on the Sirromet Winery property in Mount Cotton. This venue is a short drive from Brisbane and the Ivory Coast and is a wonderful place to dine, drink wine, and stay a night or two if you are in the area.
Helicopter rides on set

One of the most unique experiences you can have at Sirromet is flying over the area in a helicopter and landing right at the winery. Actress Ariana Greenblatt told Screen Rant in an interview that one of her favorite memories while filming was getting to fly in a helicopter for the first time.
She said they were, “on top of this mountain looking down at Queensland, Australia. It was crazy. I saw kangaroos and koala bears; it was phenomenal and amazing.”
Was “Love and Monsters” filmed in a studio?

While much of the “Love And Monsters” filming locations can be found in the luscious mountains, beaches, and countrysides of Queensland, Australia, some of the film was shot in the studio. These studio scenes and shots came out of the Screen Queensland Studios in Hemmant, Australia just outside of Brisbane. This location opened in 2019 and is Australia’s third-largest studio complex!
However, director Dylan O’Brien told Decider that they tried to stay out of the studio as much as possible. “That was one of the big things for me: I didn’t want it to end up feeling too glossy, or too artificial. I wanted it to feel like a real journey, and a real adventure,” said O’Brien. “You feel like when he’s in the dirt, he’s in the dirt. As opposed to when you get the sense that it’s a blue screen and a studio.”
