Telecom Tower Turned Architectural Marvel: Explore this Month’s Wow Space

The S-A-L-T (Sea-Air-Land-Tower) House is a study in opposing forces. This industrial building was originally constructed in 1972 to transmit long-distance phone calls and television signals across the country. Since then, designers John Jennings and Sasha Tarnopolsky have explored the push and pull of brutality and fragility, balancing the space’s 36” thick concrete walls with live plants and floods of natural light.

Teetering high in the Santa Monica Mountains, the S-A-L-T House and its sweeping views have become a haven for creative minds. The design and placement of this home offers flexibility to eager guests and their wide-ranging visions.

For production crews, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and a massive operational accordion skylight set the scene for both small- and large-scale projects, including wide angle filming, fashion photoshoots, and art expositions. The home also offers 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, San Fernando Valley, and city of Los Angeles – meaning endless opportunities to find the perfect shot. In 2020, musician Bob Moses filmed an hour-long virtual live concert at the S-A-L-T House using every level of the tower.

For guests looking to host an event at the S-A-L-T House, several entertaining areas offer seating and views for gatherers. Just steps outside the kitchen is a large terrace with a barbecue center, dining areas, and sculptural seating. Also included is a converted 40-foot-long container swimming pool with a window framing the view of Santa Catalina Island.

One guest who booked the S-A-L-T House for a birthday party noted, “Our event at the S-A-L-T house was beyond any expectations. The property was out-of-this-world beautiful. Sitting so high above the clouds, we experienced the most incredible sunset. The property owner had set up a magical dining table inside the house, which was perfect. Every guest was blown away by the jaw-dropping beauty of this location.”
