Where Is The House From “Scream” Located?

Released in 1996, it revitalized the stagnant horror genre and became the highest-grossing horror film for many years. Part of what makes the movie so great are all of the beautiful houses that were part of the fictional city of Woodsboro, California. And what’s truly scary is the way that the locations make you feel like you’re in almost any town in the United States, so the familiarity and genuineness of the locations really stand out.

Lots of aspiring filmmakers or students might watch the movie and wonder to themselves, where is the house from “Scream” located? We are going to break down some of the iconic locations from the first movie and the latest “Scream” installment. And while we’re at it, we have the help of Peerspace to share a few locations that you can rent yourself in just a few clicks. We’ll get things going by discussing the iconic opening scene from the first film. It was so memorable that it spawned plenty of parodies and imitators. Casey Becker, played by Drew Barrymore, becomes the killer Ghostface’s first victim after he terrorizes her over the telephone.

The house where this was filmed is located in Glen Ellen, California and remains standing today. There is a swingset in the establishing shot that was put up by production and according to The Location Scout Blog: “The owners liked the swing, and kept it there after the movie was finished. Supposedly, there is still fake blood from the production on the swing”. Who could blame them? Most horror fans would love to have fake blood from the movie on their property.

One of the first things that comes to everybody’s minds when they think of the “Scream” franchise is Sidney Prescott, played by the great Neve Campell. Her home is another memorable Victorian style home, this time located in Santa Rosa, California.

Sadly if you were asking yourself “Where is the house from “Scream” located?” so you could visit yourself, you’re out of luck. According to an article about the home on Hello Sidney: “It is another location surrounded by vineyards that you cannot visit without authorization.”

We’ve got one more house for you to answer the question, “Where is the house from Scream located?” The character Stu, played amazingly by Mathew Lillard, is one of the two killers that are using the Ghostface mask and his house is used as the party house and for the final confrontation. Stu’s home is still standing and is located about 70 miles north of San Francisco in the town of Tomales

According to an article on Distractify, the house was available to rent in anticipation for the 2022 film. They also have an amusing anecdote from Mathew Lillard himself about the home: “Actually, two people have died in this house. Literally, two people have died in the house. So coming up the hill and you’re doing a Wes Craven film and somebody tells you, ‘Oh, by the way, two people have died in the house,’ it brings on an entirely new thing”. They go on to describe that the former owners passed away from illness but it doesn’t keep the vibe from being scary to this very day.
