What is “Beetlejuice”?

Tim Burton’s 1988 horror-comedy “Beetlejuice” has been a fan favorite ever since it was released and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Makeup. The movie has since spawned its own Broadway musical, a cartoon, and even several video games. It’s no wonder that fans have been so excited to hear that a sequel is finally in the works, which began production in 2022.
One element that we’re hoping will be in the sequel are some of the larger-than-life locations from the first movie. The quaint Connecticut town and colorfully zany netherworld that Betelgeuse hails from beg the question: where was “Beetlejuice” filmed?

Is Winter River, Connecticut a real place?

You probably remember that the movie takes place in a town called Winter River, Connecticut, raising the question: where was “Beetlejuice” filmed? The town in the movie and the house that the Maitland’s live in certainly look like they’re in New England.
According to IMDB, the actual filming location for Winter River, Connecticut is not far off! It was filmed in the town of East Corinth, Vermont. This was just for exterior shots, while they shot most of the interiors on a soundstage in Culver City, California. Despite all this, there are still many real-life locations that fans may want to visit if they ever find themselves in Vermont.
Where did they film the house from “Beetlejuice”?

Probably the most iconic location in the movie is the gothic Victorian mansion the Maitlands haunt when the Deetz family move in. Seeing the house, which is set on a picturesque hill, is sure to elicit the question: where was “Beetlejuice” filmed?
An article in Hooked on Houses says that while they filmed it in East Corinth, Vermont, the house was just a facade they later tore down. The most exciting parts about the Maitland family home are the eclectic and interesting sets that made up each of the rooms of the home once it was turned into an art piece by the Deetz family. These were all part of Culver City Studios and were not preserved after filming.
Check out some pictures in the article that illustrate just how drastic the transformation was when the home changed hands.
Notable East Corinth, Vermont filming locations

So now we know where the principal filming locations from the movie are. Next, we can give a more detailed answer to the question “Where was ‘Beetlejuice’ filmed?”. We mentioned that they shot the interiors in Culver City, California, but which exterior shots did they film in East Corinth?
Let’s start at the beginning of the movie when the Maitlands, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, visit a hardware store on their way home. According to Chowdaheadz, this is now a defunct general store in East Corinth. However, the building does still exist, so be sure to snap a picture while you’re in the area.
The next location is the covered bridge where the Maitlands meet their untimely demise. Apparently, there is a bridge that leads into the town of East Corinth, but it is not actually covered. In fact, that was put up for the movie and then taken down after. And during the first flyover shot of the movie, the crew asked the town’s residents to stay indoors.
The last location that we’re going to cover in our tour of East Corinth is the schoolhouse that Lydia attends at the end of the movie, Miss Shannon’s School for Girls. The same article from Chowdaheadz tells us that this is actually the Masonic Hall in the town of East Corinth.
That covers everything you’ll need to know if you ever wondered, “Where was ‘Beetlejuice’ filmed?”
Will they film the “Beetlejuice” sequel in Vermont?

There is a new “Beetlejuice” movie in the works, with both Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder reprising their roles. So now you’re probably wondering if it will also be filmed in the state of Vermont?
An article from Vermonter.com tells us that, despite a petition to try to bring the production back, they will not film the new “Beetlejuice” in Vermont. Interestingly, they also dispel a rumor that the model Adam Maitland made in the attic was housed at the local library – it seems it was never there!
If you want to learn a little more about the history of East Corinth and how the town has fared since “Beetlejuice”, there is this article in Smithsonian Magazine. It even includes interviews with some of the town’s residents. Fans will be glad to hear that they’re welcome in the town if they want to make their own pilgrimage to the original home of Betelgeuse!
