Meet Kimani, Space for Change Recipient

Kimani Worghs is a visionary photographer and a 2024 Space for Change recipient. We caught up with Kimani to see how Space for Change and Peerspace helped bring his three-part photo series, titled Ascendance, Dreaming of Saturn, and Triumph, to life.

As described by Kimani, this series “embraces the theme of ascension, drawing from my Ghanaian heritage, adolescence, and personal journey as a photographer striving to reach a higher level in my work. Ascendance celebrates Ghana’s ascent through the Golden Stool, a symbol of unity and strength for the Asante people. This series captures the regal elegance, cultural richness, and historical depth of Ghanaian traditions, honoring the resilience and spirit of my ancestors. Dreaming of Saturn is a depiction of adolescent imagination and the dream of space exploration. Shot in black and white, I used shape, texture, and movement to illustrate the preparation for a dreamscape journey to Saturn, creating a sense of wonder and possibility. Triumph is a self-portrait series that represents victory and growth.”

“Peerspace allowed me to transform these visions into reality, providing the space to explore and experiment while pushing the boundaries of my creativity.

– Kimani Worghs, Space for Change recipient

Upon receiving Peerspace credit through the Space for Change program, Kimani booked this sunny New York City photo studio with a sand floor. When selecting the perfect shoot location, Kimani noted that he is “inspired by the creative freedom a studio space offers. I love the idea of thinking like a painter, starting with a blank canvas and adding elements that shape and elevate my artistic vision and style as a photographer. Elements such as texture, color, and unique lighting all contribute to bringing my vision to life and harmonizing with the model.”
