Just like the ancient Egyptian capital it was named after, Memphis, TN, started out as a port city, then became an influential center for arts and culture. Known for its music scene, Memphis lent its sound to multiple genres, including rock, blues, and gospel. Its location near the Mississippi Delta means it shares as much in common with the Deep South as it does with other parts of Tennessee. If you’re looking for things to do in the region, check out our list of 10 team outing ideas in Memphis to help you explore the culture of this uniquely American city. Enjoy!
1. See the ducks at the Peabody Hotel
This quirky Memphis tradition is an easy team outing idea that doesn’t require a lot of planning. Every day, a group of ducks are escorted down the red carpet of the Peabody Hotel to hang out in the lobby fountain. Crowds line up to see the “Duckmaster” lead the ceremony, once at 11am and again at 5pm as the ducks return to their “penthouse” suite on the roof. Come after work to have a drink with your team while enjoying this 90-year-old ritual.
2. Host your own outing at a Peerspace venue
If hotel crowds aren’t your thing, rent a private Peerspace venue to start a workplace tradition of your own. One of our favorite venues in this region is a historic mansion in Muscle Shoals. Take your team on a day trip to this beautiful venue that can accommodate up to 50 guests. Plan a team photoshoot, host a catered dinner, or put together a weekend retreat. The mansion is owned by musicians who can even provide live music upon request.
For even more ideas, search Peerspace to find additional venues available to rent from local hosts. If you need A/V gear, photography equipment, and other items or services, just call up the Peerspace Concierge service for help adding customized options on to your booking.
3. Walk the path of the Mississippi River at Mud Island
Mud Island is just one of several parks and facilities you can visit or rent for the day in Memphis. But what’s special about this one is that it features a five-block replica of the Mississippi River. You can spend the day alongside the river while tracing its entire 1,000-mile route from Cairo, IL, to New Orleans. Every 30 inches represents a mile of the real-life river.
4. See the buffalo at Shelby Farms Park
Shelby Farms Park is one of the only places you can hang out with buffalo and play paintball at the same venue (but not at the same time!). This massive park covers 4,500 acres and has 40 miles of trails, as well as 20 bodies of water. Best of all, you can reach it from downtown Memphis via the Greenline, a 10-mile “rails-to-trail” bike path. In addition to a buffalo herd, the park features laser tag, paintball, zip lines, and more, making it a great team outing idea in Memphis!
5. Spend the day at the Bass Pro Pyramid
One of the city’s most memorable buildings, the Memphis Pyramid sat vacant for several years before it was reopened as a Bass Pro megastore. Now, it’s home to a spa, a shooting range, an “underwater” bowling alley, and 600,000 gallons of water features, including an aquarium and a cypress swamp stocked with live fish. There’s also a 28-story glass elevator and observation deck, as well as the Big Cypress Lodge, a hotel and event space that can accommodate up to 350 guests. Rent it out for a team retreat to make the most of your day at the Pyramid.
6. Go on a cruise with Memphis Riverboats
One of the most iconic team outing ideas in Memphis is a riverboat cruise, which will take you up and down the Mississippi River on a historic paddlewheeler. You can choose from a public sightseeing cruise or a dinner cruise, which features a live blues and jazz band, as well as a classic BBQ-style dinner. Or, book the whole boat for a private charter just for your team!
7. Take a culinary tour with Tastin’ ‘Round Town
This epic food tour will take you to six restaurants over the course of four hours to experience some of the city’s most impressive dishes. You’ll also learn about the history and culture of Memphis, and hear some live music along the way. Most importantly, the tour focuses on local chefs and family-owned restaurants, so you’ll know you’re getting an authentic regional experience.
8. Sample local beers on the Memphis Brew Bus
If you’d rather learn about brews than blues, hop on the Memphis Brew Bus for a tour of some of the city’s best craft breweries. You’ll spend three-and-a-half hours visiting three breweries, with a pint to drink at each stop. On the bus, you’ll hear narration by a local DJ from Radio Memphis. If you want to customize the trip, rent out the bus for a private party or team outing with up to 20 guests.
9. Attend a free concert at Levitt Shell
While you’ll find music venues all over town, the free concert series at the Levitt Shell is a great team outing idea in Memphis during the summer and fall. Each year, there are over 50 concerts presented for free at this open-air venue in Midtown. You and your team can bring a picnic to enjoy food and drink on the lawn. You can even rent out the entire facility for a private party or corporate event if you want to provide your own entertainment lineup!
10. Visit the Victorian Village
This neighborhood in Memphis features around a dozen historic homes built in the 19th century. Several of them are open to the public as museums, and one is a bed-and-breakfast. Take your team on a self-guided walking tour of the village, or rent out the Woodruff-Fontaine House for a private dinner party, magic show, or ghost tour in a historic mansion.
These are just a few of the best team outing ideas in Memphis that we’ve come across — and we haven’t even included Graceland, since you probably already know about that one!
