What is “Big Sky”?

Returning for a third season in the fall of 2022, the crime drama thriller “Big Sky” has captivated audiences with its thrilling tale of kidnappings in Lewis and Clark County, Montana.
Based on the books by C.J. Box, the show follows private detective Cassie Dewell, played by Kylie Burnbury, and ex-cop Jenny Hoyt, played by Katheryn Winnick, as they race the clock to solve a spate of kidnappings and murders.
The show lives up to its title, as the landscapes of Lewis and Clark County, Montana are quite the sight to behold. In fact, they have left viewers asking themselves: where is “Big Sky” filmed?
Most shows and movies aren’t shot in the actual location where they’re meant to be set, and today we’re going to tell you whether or not that is also the case for “Big Sky.”
We’ll also explore some memorable locations from both seasons one and two that you’ll be sure to recognize. We’ll also let you know which ones you can go see for yourself!

Is Lewis & Clark County, Montana a real place?

Let’s first establish whether or not Lewis & Clark County is actually a real place. Unlike some other shows that are only based on certain areas, the setting of “Big Sky” is a very real place in Montana. And, it’s one that is just as beautiful as those in the show.
Discovering Montana says that Lewis & Clark County, named after the two explorers, was founded in 1868 and is currently home to over 70,000 people. There is no shortage of incredible natural wonders to see there!
If you visit for yourself, make sure to check out the Great Divide Ski Area and Gates of the Mountain Wilderness Area. You can even hike the Lewis & Clark Trail to retrace the footsteps of the legendary expedition!
Now that we know the show is based on a real area, we can get to answering the question “Where is ‘Big Sky’ filmed?”
Did they film “Big Sky” season 1 In Montana?

We have established that the setting of “Big Sky” is based on a real place in Montana, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the first season was filmed there.
According to Atlas of Wonders, the only thing that was shot in Montana for the first season were the overhead shots of Helena, the capital of Montana where much of the story is set. As for the rest of the filming, they tell us that it was done in the Vancouver, Canada area, a major film hub where quite a lot of television productions take place.
That same article by Atlas of Wonders also tells us that the series makers filmed “Big Sky” partially in Fort Langley, a town outside of Vancouver. This isn’t the first time a show has been shot there – popular teen shows “Riverdale” and “Sabrina” were also shot there.
If you want to see Dewell and Hoyt Private Investigations, head down to Church Street in Fort Langley. Nearby, you can also see Cassie’s house and Merilee’s quilt store.
Squamish Valley
As for what doubled as the gorgeous Yellowstone region of Montana, the same article tells us that you can find that in the Squamish Valley. The beautiful rainforests of the Squamish Valley have been used for other movies like “The Revenant” as well as the “Twilight” series. There is so much to see in the Squamish Valley, so be sure to check out Explore Squamish to see some of the area’s amazing parks, wildlife preserves, and waterfalls that rival Yellowstone in their beauty.
The last season one location we’re going to cover today is the home where the kidnapper and truck driver Ronald lived. Atlas of Wonders tells us that this is the Thomas Joseph Brown house in Surrey, a heritage home that was built in the early 20th century. This same home has also been used in shows like “The X-Files” and “Supernatural.”
We’ve covered most of what you need to know for season one, but we aren’t completely done answering the question “Where is ‘Big Sky’ filmed?”

Where did they film “Big Sky” seasons 2 and 3?

While the first season of “Big Sky” was shot in Vancouver, the production decided that another location was more suitable for the next two seasons. According to an article in Deadline, the production moved from Vancouver to New Mexico, and the two areas were visually similar enough that it didn’t change the setting of the show from Montana.
They are returning to the same area for season 3, so now you know the answer to the question “Where is ‘Big Sky’ filmed?”
While you might not expect New Mexico to have such a robust film industry, they have created an ideal setting for film production in recent years. New Mexico Economic Development Department Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes shares some of the secrets to their success. “From the competitive incentive, a world-class crew, infrastructure, and close proximity to L.A. the secret is out – New Mexico offers an established ecosystem and is the place to be for film and TV. We are thrilled to have Big Sky shooting in our state.”
Find your own “Big Sky”-inspired filming location

Now that you know that both Vancouver and New Mexico have been used to double as Lewis & Clark County, Montana, we’re happy to share a “Big Sky”-inspired filming location from Peerspace.
Take a look at this awesome production farm house in Langley, near where much of the filming for season one of “Big Sky” took place. It wouldn’t take much convincing to believe that this is another location right out of Lewis & Clark County.
You don’t need to be a major Hollywood studio to access the same awesome locations that they use, so be sure to give Peerspace a look for your next project!
