Filming for “Mare of Easttown” took place in the Easttown township in Chester, Pennsylvania. It’s a cozy small town just shy of 11,000 people. For the showrunners, filming in an authentic Pennsylvania small town was a driving factor behind the show. 

“We definitely pursued as many locations and things that were very regionally specific [as possible],” said director Craig Zobel in an interview with Deadline. Delaware County and that area of southern Pennsylvania looks very unique in its own way and we wanted to make sure we got as much of it in the frame as possible.”

Filming for “Mare of Easttown” began in 2019. The production took a brief hiatus due to COVID-19 and resumed again in 2020. Filming also took place in other neighborhoods near Philadelphia, like Wallingford, Coatesville, and Chadds Ford.

According to Atlas of Wonders, Mare’s house is located in Wallingford, just a few miles outside of Philadelphia. Her ex-husband’s house is actually located to the rear of this home. 

Other character houses can be found elsewhere. The apartment building where Erin’s friend Jess lives is located in Coatesville, and so is the house where Carrie Layden lives. Dylan Hinchey’s home is in Mont Clare, while the McMenamin house is in Chadds Ford. 

Please note these houses are private residences. The Nether Providence township police have asked fans not to trespass and to also respect the privacy of the homeowners. 

The church

The church is St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, located in Mount Airy, Philadelphia. According to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the earliest stone structure on the site dates back to the 1730s.

The church operated in the area for nearly 300 years until it officially closed its doors in September 2016. Father Dan Hastings and Deacon Mark Burton’s home is also located on the church grounds. 

The school

The production filmed the scenes depicting the Easttown Middle at a handful of different Pennsylvania schools. There were two gym scenes recorded for the series, each depicting a different time period.

According to Atlas of Wonders, one school gym is at Coatesville Intermediate school and the other at South Brandywine Middle School. South Brandywine closed its doors in 2019, while Coatesville Intermediate High school is still active. 

The establishing shot of the middle school was filmed at the Tinicum Elementary School in Essington. However, the other exterior scenes depicting the school took place at the Gordon Educational Center in Coatesville.

The production shot outdoor scenes a few different locations throughout the Philly area. For instance, the river where John and Billy go fishing is Wissahickon Creek. It’s a tributary of the Schuylkill River winding through Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. 

A scene from the last episode took place at the waterfalls of Magargee Dam, which sits upstream from the Valley Green Inn in Philadelphia. Filming crews were also spotted in Wissahickon Valley Park, one of the most popular public parks in Philadelphia.

Mare of Easttown featured a handful of local businesses and other local landmarks, too. The laundromat from episode six is a real laundromat — the Triangle Coin Wash — on Ridge Avenue in Philadelphia. The Jewelry store is Dyer’s Jewelers in Aston, Pennsylvania. 

The scene at the restaurant, where the family eats pizza before the wedding, is Duffer’s Mill in Chichester. The bar where Mare meets Richard Ryan is the American Legion in Ogden. Although they filmed scenes for the bar’s interior at the Star Hotel in Marcus Hook. 

The Easttown police station is actually an old train station in Coatesville. The courthouse from the final episode was the Founder’s Hall at Girard College.
