What is “Black Panther”?

In 2018, “Black Panther” broke the mold of Marvel movies. And thus far, it has been the only one to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. The star studded cast was led by the late Chadwick Boseman, whose loss fans are still mourning. With an upcoming sequel slated to be released in the winter of 2022-23, more and more people are revisiting the movie that introduced the world to Wakanda!

“Black Panther” was more than just a great action movie. It was also a visual feast that brought the audience along for a globe-trotting adventure through memorable and exotic locations. Each scene is memorable and begs the question of the viewer: where was “Black Panther” filmed?

Did they actually film “Black Panther” in Africa?

Part of what separated “Black Panther” from the rest of the pack of Marvel movies was none other than Wakanda. The secret African civilization was untouched by the outside world at the start of the movie is a sight to see. It’s hard to watch the colorful cities and stunning waterfalls without asking the question: where was “Black Panther” filmed?

As you might have assumed, there is no real Wakanda in Africa for the studio to film. So where exactly did Marvel Studios film at? According to the movie’s IMDB page, they filmed much of the movie in Georgia and South Korea.

You may already know that Georgia has become a hotspot for film production on the East Coast. In fact, “Black Panther” was far from the first and won’t be the last filmmakers make there. The only filming the filmmakers shot in Africa was drone footage for establishing shots. Movie-Locations.com reports that the captured the footage in South Africa, Zambia, and southwest Uganda.

Notable Atlanta “Black Panther filming locations

Despite the story taking place all over the world, the filmmakers did a very effective job at making Atlanta, Georgia, work for so many different locations. There are plenty of action sequences and small scenes in the film that look nothing like Atlanta. It may have made you ask the question: where was “Black Panther” filmed?

One of the earliest scenes in the movie is a flashback, where we see T’Challa’s father visiting his brother, who is working undercover in Oakland, California. According to Atlas of Wonders, this isn’t Oakland at all. It’s the Wheat Street Towers in Atlanta, not far from the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They also mention that the basketball court where we see the kids playing near the apartment is at the corner of Auburn Ave NE and Jackson Street NW.

The next location to cover is the museum where Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, performs a daring heist of an ax made of vibranium. USA Today reported that the Museum of Great Britain from the movie doesn’t exist and that they shot the scene at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. “The High,” as locals call it, is the largest and most prominent museum of the southeast United States.

Atlanta-area filming locations

Atlanta wasn’t the only place to double as South Korea and London. They used the city and surrounding area to create some crucial scenes that take place in Wakanda. According to Explore Georgia, they used a quarry, Vulcan Materials, to depict the scenes in which characters travel to Wakanda’s snowy mountain peaks.

Another Wakanda scene they shot in the area is the epic final confrontation between the warring tribes of the nation. They shot this massive battle at Bouckaert Farm in Chattahoochee Hills, which has over 8,000 acres of bucolic pastures and woodlands.

Notable South Korea “Black Panther” filming locations

On the hunt for the arms dealer played by Andy Serkis, the story is flown to South Korea for what many regard as the best car chase in all of the MCU. Watching Okoye and T’Challa as they chase the vehicle is jaw-dropping and sure to make you ask the question: where was “Black Panther” filmed?

Adventure Girl reports that while they shot the fish market and casino in Atlanta, the subsequent chase was on location in South Korea. They used the beautiful city of Busan, at the country’s southeastern tip, to great effect for the car chase scene.

Where did they film the waterfall scenes in “Black Panther”?

Much of the action in Wakanda is in front of massive waterfalls that seem to go on forever. While they completed close-up shots at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, they filmed many of the establishing shots of the falls on location.

According to Movie-Locations.com, the real-life Wakandan waterfalls are Iguazu Falls, which is on the border of Argentina and Paraguay.

Visiting the waterfalls is a definite requirement for anybody looking to take their own pilgrimage to Wakanda. If you decide you want to visit them for yourself, then you’re in luck! The falls remain accessible and are a favorite among tourists.
