Based on a children’s book by the same name, the action-fantasy movie “Jumanji” was released to box office success and later spawned two sequels, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and “Jumanji: The Next Level.”

The movie follows children who play the mystical board game “Jumanji,” which soon takes them on an adventure filled with exotic animals, locations, and dangers to face. Along the way, they meet Alan Parrish, played by the late great Robin Williams, who had been trapped in the board game for 20 years.

The kids, played by Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce, live in a huge Victorian house in the town of Brantford, New Hampshire, that is transformed by every move they make in the game. The special effects were awe-inspiring and especially amazing at the time. You may remember watching the movie and wondering: where was “Jumanji” filmed?

The town of Brantford, New Hampshire is home to the Parrish family, their shoe factory, and many of the other locations we see in the movie. But you still are probably wondering: where was “Jumanji” filmed?

If you look for Brantford on a map, you’ll be searching for a while. The town itself doesn’t actually exist, but is based on some other towns in New Hampshire.

According to IMDB, the town of Brantford was primarily filmed in Keene, New Hampshire, with other locations scattered around Maine and British Columbia, Canada. The three locations together end up creating a convincingly cohesive space. All of it feels like it could have been shot right along the same street.

Now that we know generally where the movie was shot, we can start getting into some of the specifics.

The first place we are going to cover today is Keene, New Hampshire, where they filmed much of the New Brantford scenes.

According to Movie Locations, one of the big scenes that was actually shot in Keene was the scene where the animals are stampeding through Main Street towards the end of all the chaos in the movie. In fact, they used more than 150 locals as extras running from the computer generated animals.

They transformed the central town square in Keene for the movie. It was overrun with vines and a statue of Angus Parrish was also erected there. If you go to Keene, New Hampshire and visit the central square today, you can still see the sign for the Parrish Shoe Factory and a memorial for the sorely missed Robin Williams.

Now that we know a little bit more about the New Hampshire locations, we can continue to answer the question: where was “Jumanji” filmed?

Moving on to the other locations that were filmed in the United States, we’re taking a trip up the coast of Maine. According to IMDB, the Parrish Shoe Factory is in the town of North Berwick, Maine, and is called the Old Woolen Mill.

The mill sits along the Great Works River and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. A profile on the factory from 92 Moose, a Maine radio station, had the following to say about the mill’s history and present state. “The mill closed in 1955 and remained mostly unused for nearly 40 years when it served as the site of the Parrish Shoe Factory in the 1995 fantasy movie Jumanji. In 2009 the structure was renovated into a senior housing site by the Caleb Group, a nonprofit housing organization of New England.”

We now know all of the United States filming locations, but there is one more place to check out on our quest to answer the question “where was ‘Jumanji’ filmed?”

Vancouver, British Columbia, is another hub for movie productions. And according to Movie Locations, many of the interiors were shot at Bridge Studios in Burnaby. The Parrish family mansion was apparently just a facade that was built on a property in the Mount Pleasant District of Burnaby. It makes sense since the house was utterly destroyed by the kids playing “Jumanji” there. If you visit the site at 1438 Balfour Avenue, you’ll see the house that was built on the lot in 2008.

The last place to mention is the supermarket, where the players have a showdown with the hunter Van Pelt. In the movie, the supermarket was called “Sir-Save-A-Lot,” and according to Movie Locations, it’s at 56th Street and 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen, south of Vancouver. If you go, don’t worry – you can expect to get your grocery shopping done without wild animals attacking you!
