Jane Campion’s “The Power Of The Dog” is regarded as one of the best that was released in 2021. The movie was nominated for a total of eleven Academy Awards, but only ended up bringing home the Best Director Oscar for Campion.

Based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Savage, the movie follows a rancher named Phil Burbank (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), a jaded and difficult man struggling with his relationships and own feelings.

One of the things that made the movie so memorable was the portrayal of the American West during the 1920s. The rugged landscape of Montana on screen is beautiful and sometimes desolate. Fans of the movie are sure to ask the question: where was “The Power Of The Dog” filmed?

Before we figure out the specifics, the first thing you might be wondering about is whether or not the movie was actually filmed on location in Montana. The gorgeous scenery and genuine looking landscape is sure to prompt the question: where was “The Power Of The Dog” filmed?

According to the New Zealand Film Commission, the movie was an Australian/New Zealand co-production, but was primarily filmed in New Zealand. Jane Campion did consider shooting in Montana originally, but the fact that New Zealand is her home country and she had an enormous amount of talent to work with from there helped make the final decision.

One of the people that she was able to work with was production designer Grant Major, who earned an Academy Award for his work on another New Zealand production: ”The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King”.

Grant Major ended up building the majority of the Burbank Ranch set, among others, and had a lot of kind words to say about Jane Campion in the same New Zealand Film Commision article: “I truly respect her intelligence and sensitivity. She’s one of the world’s best directors, in my view. And from a production designer’s perspective, she’s got a really good eye. We worked through all the creative decisions together.”

Now that we know that the filming of the movie was done in New Zealand, you may still have the question: where was “The Power Of The Dog” filmed? To start things off, we’re going to take a look at the Burbank Ranch where much of the film takes place.

According to Screen Rant, they filmed the ranch in the Otago region of New Zealand, at a farm in Hawkdun Range. There were a number of old farm buildings already in place that had to be torn down in order to get the correct look for the Burbank’s cattle ranch.

If you are looking to check out the Otago region for yourself, you can visit the Oteake Conservation Park and see all of the beautiful and somewhat desolate scenery that was seen in the movie. There are over 65,000 hectares of land to explore while you’re there, all chock full of breathtaking views and rugged land.

Now you know that they filmed the Burbank Ranch in the Otago region of New Zealand. However, there are still other scenes from the movie that will make you ask the question: where was “The Power Of The Dog” filmed?”

One scene that you might remember is the one where George Burbank, played by Jesse Plemons, takes his new wife Rose, played by his real-life spouse Kirsten Dunst, to a hill with a breathtaking view and learns a few dance moves. According to Far Out Magazine, this scene was shot at Queenstown Hill, which overlooks the city of Queenstown.

If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll also remember that there were a few times at which the characters left the isolation of the ranch to head into town. According to Screen Rant, some of the scenes were shot in Oamaru, a town in North Otago that has a stretch of road called the Victorian Precinct.

They also go on to write that the scene where George picks up his parents from the train station was shot at the Dunedin Railway Station. This is a well-known local destination because of the stunning architecture. Lastly, they mention that some of the interiors had to be shot in studios, which were located in the towns of Auckland and Dunedin.
